Students at Chimacum Creek Primary are taught reading through a balanced approach which incorporates both literature and phonics. Daily reading instruction is provided using materials from Rigby Literacy Tree. Additional supplementary materials are used to provide systematic instruction of phonics. The Accelerated Reader Program is used to encourage and support independent reading.
Students are individually assessed on a regular basis using running records to determine their current reading level and guide instruction. All second grade student are also assessed in the fall in accordance with the Washington State testing program for rate, fluency, and comprehension. Individualized Reading Improvement Plans are written for each second grade student who does not meet designated standards on the fall assessment. These reading plans, which are shared with parents at conference time, are used to help guide and provide reading instruction as well as assist parents in supporting reading improvement with their child at home.
The teaching of reading is a major instructional emphasis at Chimacum Creek Primary and students are engaged in reading instructions and activities for approximately ninety minutes each school day.
