Improved student performance in writing has been an area focus for the Chimacum School District and Chimacum Creek Primary. To support the district adopted Six Trait Writing approach all instructional staff have received on going training during the past several school years. As a follow up to training opportunities, teachers have regularly met by grade levels to plan the implementation of Six Trait Writing at Chimacum Creek Primary. In addition, a writing sample from every student is gathered and scored by staff as part of a school wide writing assessment project.
Direct instruction, the use of literature to provide writing examples, and lots of practice are common instructional strategies used to teach student in writing. Students write regularly, keeping journals, completing timed fast writes, and learning to write in different forms for different purposes. Writing is also used in the teaching of reading and supported through many reading follow up activities. Visitors to Chimacum Creek Primary will notice many student writing samples displayed proudly in our hall ways.
