6th Grade Water Quality

Greetings from Chimacum Washington! We are the 6th period Science class, and are in 6th grade at Chimacum Middle School. Our class tested Chimacum Creek (it runs behind our school), Big Creek, and the Hood Canal in October and November for many different kinds of pollution and pollution indicators. We also took samples of creek water and tested them in the classroom. The Film Crew took footage of all that was going on and are making a movie out of it. (To view the movie click here).

The reason why we tested those three places is so that we can send data from 3 different points on Chimacum Creek to the Northwest Salmon Coalition on how badly our creek is polluted. They then take that data and use it to figure out how the salmon will fare in the creek water. Here are some ways you can fight pollution: Don't pour acids and things that could hurt living organisms down your sink, because some pipes lead to rivers. Don't support builders who are tearing down trees on river banks, because the trees' roots prevent erosion. Do not clear out woody debris in rivers, because the young salmon need something to block the current so that they are not constantly swimming. Don't bury toxic waste near rivers or creeks, because it will seep into the water flow and poisen living organisms. Try to persuade people not to build farms and factories near rivers because the runnoff could contaminate the water.
