To find out if your child's bus is running on emergency late start schedule or possible school closure look on line on the Internet at http://csd49.org.

You can find emergency routes and closure information on the following Radio and TV stations.

AM KIRO 710, KOMO 1000, FM KMPS 94.1, KPLU 88.5, TV KING 5, KIRO 7, AND KOMO 4. If these do not work for you call 732-4040 at transportation.

Parents may use their own discretion about the safety of their child(ren) as to whether or not they attend school on these days.

Route times are approximate. The drivers will be driving very cautiously, which of course will slow them down. Please have your child(ren) warmly dressed and remind them to stay well off the road. Have an alternate plan for your child if the bus does not arrive in a timely manner.

Safety Tip

Got a call from a concerned citizen regarding the dark clothing kids are

wearing and the inability of drivers to see them, especially when they

aren't being safe on the roadways.

Remind ALL kids (even the older ones) that they need to use proper safety precautions.

Parent Conference by appointment only!

Unlike the Elementary School where parent conferences are scheduled for every student, we here at the middle school only meet with you when you want to meet with us.

We send home progress reports to let you know how your child is doing. If you would like to meet with your child's teachers, we encourage you to please call the office to schedule a conference.

Attendance

Please remember to excuse your children's absences within two school days of the absence. If you know in advance that your child(ren) will be gone, please notify the office so their absence may be excused and your child can get his assignments from teachers.

Remember that our main purpose in school is to help all children achieve greatness in academic areas. When all students come to school, ready to learn, agree to follow school rules, and cooperate with their teachers, we will truly see wonderful results. Thanks for being part of our team!

CMS Band and Choir Concert

When: December 7, 2005

Time: 7:00 p.m.

"Flashing Red Means Stop Ahead"

Take a few minutes to review bus and pedestrian safety rules with your students.

Students riding a school bus should always:

Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.

Stand at least 5 giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road.

Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says it's okay before stepping onto the bus.

Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.

Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.

Crossing students should:

Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus.

Walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least 10 giant steps ahead of the bus.

Be sure the bus driver can see them, and they can see the bus driver.

Wait for the driver's signal to cross.

Things Kids Should know About School Bus Safety:

The bus driver and others cannot see you if you are standing closer than 10 feet to the bus. Stay out of the danger zone!

If something falls under or near the bus, tell the driver. NEVER try to pick it up yourself!

While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.

When you get on or off the bus, look for the bus safety lights and make sure they are flashing.

Be alert to traffic. When you get on or off the bus, look left, right, left before you enter or cross the street.

When the driver says it is safe to cross the street, remember to CROSS IN FRONT of the bus.

Stay in your seat and sit quietly so that the driver is not distracted.

There are about 10,300 school bus drivers in Washington State, driving 9,300 school buses. Each day almost 500,000 students

7th grade World Geography

We are just wrapping up a unit on polar regions in World Geography. Students had a chance to do some in depth discovery and share their learning with the class in student-led teaching. They did a great job of sharing their knowledge and building a sense of place, people, climate, and animals in the world's most extreme ends.

In December, we will be studying the world's religions and learning about languages. We will be learning basic facts about major religions and their distribution around the globe and students will have a chance to try writing in various scripts to become familiar with the wide variety of written words around the world.

7th Grade Culture Fair Update:

Work for Culture Fair is underway! Because this is such a large project, students are being given small portions at a time. It is essential that students regularly review the project calendars and keep up with their due dates.

Dec. 6 - Display Boards paid for and distributed on this day. Cost - $2.60

Dec. 10 - Workshop, rooms 401-402, 2-4 p.m. (Bring display boards and an adult)

Dec. 13 - Family Tree or Timeline draft due.

Dec. 14 - Evening Workshop, rooms 401-402, 6-8 p.m. (Bring display boards and an adult)

Jan. 3 - I-Search Essay draft due

Jan. 7 - Workshop, rooms 401-402, 2-4 p.m. (Bring display boards and an adult)

Jan. 9 - Essay Final due

Jan. 10 - Completed Display Boards due

Jan. 18 - Culture Fair at Eagle Night!

We realize that completing this project during vacation can be a challenge, but it can also be a great family bonding experience, especially if your child is doing a family project.

Workshop dates are optional, but highly recommended. Also, students may need a ride to school on the day the display board is due so that their's is not damaged. Please consider this ahead of time.

If you have questions, please contact Ms. Berg by calling the middle school office or via email at gretchen_berg@csd49.org. Thank you for your support!

Notes from the Principal

With the end of the first trimester, we are reminded how quickly time passes. Our school year is already one-third completed, and yet we have so much work to be done!

We continue making progress on our school improvement goals, which are:

1. Strengthen School Climate

2. Improve Academic Achievement

Our Eagle Time Advisories are busy working on a variety of activities: social events, community service, games, and rich conversations. We are seeing benefits to this program, particularly in the relationships that are being fostered between adults and youth at our school, but also among students of different ages and backgrounds. It is through such efforts that we will continue to see improvements in our school climate.

We believe that climate and social order combined with academic knowledge and skill make a well-rounded education. Academic achievement is, of course, the critical purpose of school. As such, we have reinstituted our school-wide writing program this year. Your children should have completed two formal writing assignments already this year, and they will complete six more throughout the year, two in each content area of math, social studies, language arts, and science.

In addition to these two goals, we have many other fantastic things happening at CMS. We have three different groups of teachers participating in formal collaboration, a research based form of training. Our math teachers are working with trainers from the ESD in Bremerton to integrate technology into the classroom. Our science teachers are working with teachers all over the Olympic Peninsula and Skagit and Whatcom Counties under the direction of WWU and the ESD. Finally, four teachers are working with a coach from the ESD to develop their curriculum and instruction. All three groups are observing other teachers as a way to improve the teaching and learning in their own classrooms. We are thrilled to have 10 teachers participating in formal collaboration, and an additional two teachers participating in informal grade-level coaching.

At a recent Site Council meeting, I had the opportunity to discuss these important issues with several parents. We have agreed to continue meeting quarterly. The next meeting will be Monday, January 23, 6:00 7:30. Topics for conversation will include dress code, movies in classrooms, and continued discussions on our school improvement plan. Additionally, we will set two more meeting dates and agenda topics for the meetings. Site Council is a parent, teacher, student advisory board that has been in place at CMS for many years. It is open to all parents, and we hope you will attend.

As the cold weather is also upon us, please remember to travel safely. Our middle school kids are often very difficult to see before and after school. Please encourage your children to wear light outer clothing, carry a flashlight, and use reflector tape on their bags, shoes, or coats.

Seasons Blessings to you all!
