Tutoring available through the Literacy Council

Barbara Hinchcliff of the Literacy Council has volunteer tutors available for students who need assistance with reading, writing and math. This is a free weekly tutoring service and can be available at school during school hours. If you are interested in tutoring for your 6th, 7th or 8th grader, call Marilyn Sterbick, school counselor, and she can make the arrangements.

Eighth Grade Tackles Six-Trait Writing (again)

Because the class of 2008 will have to pass the WASL benchmarks to qualify for their Certificate of Mastery (a requirement to graduate), the eighth grade students are studying a writing process which will help them to "score" their own and others' writing. If students are able to evaluate their own writing, and understand the steps in the process of writing, it will help them to be better writers. They will then be able to spot the areas in which their writing needs to be improved, and be able to go in and do the editing that is required. It will no longer be a mystery about what good writing really is.

Students are currently working on practice scoring of sample papers. They are learning to use the rubrics (standards for grading) to make accurate assessments of each of the six traits (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions). As the quarter progresses, they will be using the rubrics to score writing assignments, and they will have a big writing assignment for the end of the quarter, written and scored according to the Six Traits rubrics.

It is exciting to see the students start giving scores to sample writing that are consistent and accurate (in other words it's a score that a teacher would give the piece). They are becoming more articulate about their reasons for scoring papers at a certain level they really CAN tell you why they chose a 3 rather than a 1 or a 5!

Encourage your students to write, write, write there's nothing like a lot of practice to make someone good at writing.

Thanks for your support!

Art Room Could Use

Donations

Ms. Missig's art class can use donations of empty, clean yogurt containers for painting projects and clean plastic bags (the kind used for vegetables) for clay projects.

If you have any extras, please drop them off at the middle school office and we'll make sure the art classroom gets them.

Thanks for your help!

Home Ec. Class Needs Help........

Do you have some free time and like to sew - are you interested in volunteering in our home ec. class from 11:40 a.m. - 12:35 p.m.

If so, please call the middle school office and leave your name and phone number and we'll have Mrs. Martin return your call.

Emergency Bus Routes and Schedules

To find out if your child's bus is running on emergency late start schedule or possible school closure, call our SCHOOL INFORMATION LINE

#732-4090 ext 460. In addition to the school information line, you may also call transportation at 732-4040.

Emergency routes and closure information may be heard on the following AM Radio Stations:

KOMO (1000) or Komo TV Channel 4

Kiro (710)

King (1090)

Parents may use their own discretion about the safety of their child(ren), as to whether or not they attend school on these days.

Route times are approximate. The drivers will be driving very cautiously, which of course will slow them down.

Please have your child(ren) warmly dressed and remind them to stay well off the road. Have an alternate plan for your student if the bus does not arrive in a timely manner.

Reminder: For the safety of our students, during severe weather conditions, the Chimacum School District may use the alternate bus schedules.
