Student Tech Corps Activated!

Chimacum Middle School's Student Tech Corps is now active. After two months of studying and taking quizzes only to have to take a battery of tests and get 80% or better to pass, all nine students are now Pre-Professional Technology Certified Student Associates. Yes, they have a nice long title. The students that you can now ask to help you at home with your tech problems are Alyson Savage, Sarah Talley, Jeff L'Heureux, Ashely Manly, Alexis Schroader, Blythe Leigh, Trisha Ferrell, Perry Pearsal, and Charley Chesledon. Thanks to Sarah Talley's mom, all the student associates are sporting their Student Tech Corps badges and they are so excited to get going and fix every tech problem in the school! They've already worked on a few jobs here at school on our after school meetings so their confidence levels are high.

Hawaiian Luau 2003 7th grade

Our December 5th Luau was a hit! With Bernie Robinson and Melanie Perry leading our courageous students, the hula and chanting performance was a wonderful enrichment component to our regional climate unit.

For 2 weeks, approximately 45 minutes every other day, students had the opportunity to learn hula and chanting during World Geography and Language Arts (don't worry they had PLENTY of time to make up work in class). All of these students let us know that it wasn't as easy as it looks!

Bernie and Melanie both insist that the students learn the words (Hawaiian) to the songs they are dancing to, and this year the chanters were able to use Hawaiian instruments provided by Bernie. Again this year, we had live Hawaiian music and were served wonderful traditional Hawaiian food by Bernie and her 'Aloha' group. Many students took the cooking challenge and prepared haupi'a, which was very tasty, as well.

For those of you who attended, thank you for taking the time to join us! We really appreciate having you here and welcome any ideas that you might have for next year!

From the Principal's Desk

January, 2004

As the first semester draws to a close, it is clear we have much to celebrate. We are proud of the hard work our students and staff do on a daily basis. Our Gates Grant has provided much needed time for our teachers to meet together and learn about best practices in education, and are continually working to improve their teaching methods to help more kids achieve. We truly believe Education is Power! We will work to help all kids believe in themselves and their futures so they can get the best out of their opportunities at CMS.

Some highlights of the last few weeks:

§ Thank you to all the parents who completed the Perception Surveys recently. Over 2/3 of our school's families returned a completed survey. We are in the process of tallying results and will publish them soon.

§ We had a great turn-out for Eagle Night, particularly with the 7th grade Culture Fair displays. The 6th Grade poetry readings and 8th Grade Olympic Odyssey presentations. We appreciate all the time and energy that teachers and students put in to preparing this event.

§ Special thanks go out to all our 6th grade students and staff to their wonderful attitude and positive energy during our recent water emergency. Mr. Olafson, Ms. Langston, and Mr. Gonzalez all worked together with our enthusiastic maintenance crew to relocate classrooms. We are thrilled with the district's quick response as well, and hope to have things fully repaired soon.

§ Upcoming Site Council meetings:

o Monday, February 2, 5:30 7:00 in Room 402: Topic: Nutrition

o Guest Speaker: Mark Sperrazza, Director of Food Services

o Monday, March 1, 5:30 7:00 in Room 402: Topic: School Improvement

o Report on School Improvement Plan, Results of Perception Surveys

§ Our district is preparing to upgrade our student information systemthe database that stores all our information about studentsin the next few months. You may notice that all our office staff will be attending training in preparation for this conversion. We appreciate your patience with us as we learn a new system, and as our offices may be understaffed on some days during training.

Regards,

Whitney Meissner, Principal

Highly

Capable Program "News"

Culture Fair 2004-

7th Grade

Chimacum School District is initiating an open nomination process between February 2nd and February 20th for students in grades 2-8 who may be candidates for services in the Highly Capable Program.

The selection process will start with a recommendation from parents, teachers, and/or the student. Following initial screening, students may take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CoGAT) in March. A selection committee comprised of the Special Services director, HiCap coordinator, principals, counselors and teachers will then consider nominees using a matrix based on cognitive ability, achievement, and creativity. This process is based on one used by other schools' highly capable programs in our state and has been developed to conform to Washington guidelines. Students who are recommended for placement in the Highly Capable Program will then be assigned to next year's classrooms with this information in mind. The program looks forward to developing new learning opportunities based on these students' unique needs.

You may pick up nomination forms in the CCP, CES, CMS offices beginning February 1st. Please fill out the forms and return them to your child's school no later than February 20th.

If you have any questions regarding the Highly Capable Program, please call Valerie Sloane at 732-4090, ext 296, Mondays- Wednesdays.

The 7th grader's contribution to Eagle Night was once again outstanding and memorable! Thank you to all the students and families who took the opportunity to fully engage in this three month long project.

An assignment of this complexity can sometimes be an ordeal and as tedious as it may have been, we hope the learning experiences far outweighed the difficulties that you may have encountered.

What community members, staff and other students saw were the results of a tremendous amount of effort and student pride in their work. Over and over again we heard our community comment on the fact that this event gets better and better each year, and that THEY learn more about their own community and culture by attending the Culture Fair!

Because of this event, visitors discover history and connections that they didn't know existed in the Tri-Area. As teachers, we consider that to be powerful learning! We hope you do, too!

After Eagle Night, students had the opportunity to reflect back on the process and the learning of this project, and according to them, they too, learned important information from one another as well as about their chosen topic. When asked what their advice would be for next year's 7th graders about the Culture Fair project they resoundingly stated "Don't put the work off until the last three weeks! Use the full time to do your work you will need it!"

Culture Fair 2004 -

7th Grade, cont.

Chimacum

Finally, a BIG thank you to the parents who spent time in the classrooms for the Culture Fair. Those of you who helped supervise students completing the last minute details were life savers! We couldn't have had such a smooth day and evening without the parents who helped students to set up and take down boards in such an organized way!

Thank you, too, to the parents who came into the Saturday Culture Fair workshop what a difference it made for nearly 35 presentations!

Additionally thank you to ALL of you who took to time vote on Culture Fair presentations! Here are the results!
