Press Release - Family Math Night @ CMS Tues. Oct. 18th

Chimcacum Middle School will be offering parents another chance to improve their Math skills and learn about the District's Mathematics curriculum.

Parents, children and interested community members are invited to attend a Family Math Night on Tuesday, October 18th, at 7:00 pm in the Middle

School's 7th and 8th grade Math wing (Room 505).

Parents will get a chance to play with TI-73 graphing calculators, play the

factor game on an interactive whiteboard and see how teachers and students use document cameras to promote sharing and encourage Math talk. Parents will also get a chance at an in-depth look at the district's Middle School curriculum, CMP, the Connected Math Program. Tips for helping your child will also be provided.

Chimacum Middle School's Math teachers are currently participating in

Washington State's NO LIMIT (New Outcomes, Learning Improvements in

Mathematics Integrating Technology) grant training which focuses on best

practices in teaching Mathematics and the use of Professional Learning

Communities to improve teaching and learning.

Mathematics instruction used at CMS emphasizes inquiry and discovery of

mathematical ideas through the investigation of rich problem situations,

with a focus on understanding and reasoning, rather than memorization.

Culture Fair Family Night

Maybe you've heard about 7th grade Culture Fair and you're wondering what it's all about.

Maybe you've seen Culture Fair in the gym on Eagle Night and you and your 7th grader are wondering how you will accomplish such a thing. Perhaps you just want to be the best support possible for your student. Whoever you are, if you are the parent or guardian of a 7th grader, we invite you to Culture Fair Family Night to learn more about this amazing project before it is introduced in class.

Photos, previous display boards, and information packets will be available for viewing Wednesday Oct. 26th in Room 402 at 7:00 p.m.

Please come in and find out more from Ms. Berg. Students are welcome and encouraged to come as well! See you then!

Attendance

Please remember to excuse your children's absences within two school days of the absence. If you know in advance that your children will be gone, please let the teachers know so that they may receive their homework.

Remember that our main purpose in school is to help all children achieve greatness in academic areas. When all students come to school, ready to learn, agree to follow school rules, and cooperate with their teachers, we will truly see wonderful results. Thanks for being part of our team!

A Health Note to Parents

Alcohol is a drug. It is a powerful, mood-altering drug and affects children's changing and developing hormonal system. It is very harmful to bodies and minds that are still growing. When we hear of the death of a 14-year old in Oregon who was given alcohol by her parents, we should be outraged. When our children come home showing clear signs that they have been drinking, it cannot be dismissed as a "rite of passage". IT IS NOT.

If the onset of drinking is delayed by five years, a child's risk of developing serious alcohol problems is decreased by 50%.

FROM YOUR ASB

Our first dance is Friday October 21st, from 2:30 4:15. Costumes are welcome (age and event appropriate, please) if students and chaperones choose.

Successful middle school dances include parent chaperones as well as teachers and administration. Your CMS ASB would like to offer you the opportunity to join us for our first dance. There are a variety of ways that your support is needed.

Please look at the list below and decide which suits you the best, complete the form and return it to school with your student by Friday October 14th.

If you plan to chaperone the dance itself, it is helpful to arrive about 15 minutes early to go over our guidelines. Some parents like to bring ear plugs to help with the buffering of the loud music!

If you plan to help set up (decorations and food) we need you to arrive at 1:15 to check in with the office. We will be preparing the gym 6th period (1:30 2:20). If you will be helping with clean up plan to stay about an extra 30 minutes after the dance.

If you can't make it for this first dance there are three more! Check the calendar included with this newsletter and watch for the chaperone sign up sheets to come home! If you have questions, feel free to call Shannon Lowrie at 732 4219 or email me at Shannon_Lowrie@csd49.org

Thank you in advance for your help!
