October 1, 2003
The leaves are turning, the fog has rolled in, and we here at Chimacum Middle School are off to a great start! Just a few points to ponder and celebrate:
Ø Congratulations to the 8th graders! As a class, the group is making great progress toward mastery of the WASL. Due to the diligence of the teachers and students alike, nearly 35% of our students met the standard in all four areasmath, writing, reading, and listeningon the Spring 2003 exam.
Ø Our grade levels honored the victims of September 11th in amazing ways.
o The entire 8th grade class, including teachers, students, counselor and principal walked four silent laps around the track. Each step represented a voice that was silenced. The class also had a very successful food drive. o The 7th grade class was treated to a reading of President Bush's Proclamation declaring September 11th "Patriot Day". This was followed by a moment of silence, and a written reflection activity where students wrote what the day meant to them. o The 6th grade class is working on a service project cleaning up the streets around our school. We want to be good neighbors! They also did some beautiful patriotic artwork that is currently decorating the 6th grade wing of our building.
Ø The 6th grade class returned from a fabulous trip to Cispus Learning Center. Over 100 students, staff, volunteers, and high school counselors participated in the experience. Extra special thanks to the 6th grade teachers, to Dee Breithaupt, Bernie Mueller, Nancy Wyatt, our "Flint Napper" Lewis County Sheriff's Deputy Larry Nelson, and all the parent and community volunteers who organized paperwork, treats, and other details.
Ø Our first Site Team meeting will be held Monday, October 6, 5:30 7:00 p.m., in room 402. This meeting is open to all parents, students, staff, and community. In addition to setting our schedule for the remainder of the year, we will discuss the topic of Dress Code in schools. Hope to see you there!

Ø We are kicking off our 2nd Annual Magazine Sale Fundraiser. The sales will run October 1 15. Money raised will go to support our Cispus and Odyssey trips, as well as other extra curricular programs for students. If you or anyone you know and do business with has magazine subscriptions, please ask them to renew through one of our students.
Ø The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Jefferson County has opened an office at Chimacum Elementary School. If you are interested in volunteering to mentor a student, or if you know a child who could benefit from a big brother/sister, please contact Perry Spring at 732-4090 ext. 368, or by email: perry_spring@csd49.org.
As a district, we continue to focus on improved student learning. Our staff has recently received training on reading strategies, and a group of teachers is studying the concept of "Personalization"; it is our goal that every student at CMS will have at least one adult who knows him/her well and can assist with academic, social, or other issues that arise. Research continues to show a strong connection between academic success an d positive relationships between the adults and students in the school setting.
Thank you for the wonderful students you send to us every day. Our shared focus, "Education is Power!", will guide us as we help all students achieve academic excellence.
