District Links and Information

History

The name Chimacum originated from the Chimakum Valley Indians, who inhabited the area until treaties were signed with settlers, and boundaries were formed. The first school was built in 1915 and was used as Kindergarten through Eighth grade until it burned in 1943. It was later rebuilt in the present site and continues to be in use today as a K-12 school.

District Highlights

Chimacum School District has enjoyed the support of the community through the passage every two years of a local maintenance and operations levy. The levy provides many things including additional teachers to keep class sizes small, support for extra curricular activities, new technology for students and programs for highly capable students. The school board has adopted school improvement plans from all grade levels and will continue to monitor these plans annually in an effort to continually improve student instruction.

School District Boundaries

The Chimacum School District covers a 100 square mile area, which includes the communities of Port Ludlow, Port Hadlock, Irondale, Chimacum, Shine, Paradise Bay and Marrowstone Island. We serve 1,150 students in grades K-12.

Chimacum’s outstanding student involvement in high school, promotes responsible student behavior. Students who participate in activities tend to have higher grade-point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems than students generally. Out of the total number of students in the high school (348), 314 students participate in a variety of sports and clubs. Clubs include anything from Spanish to National Honor Society.

Chimacum’s Co-Curricular programs provide valuable lessons on practical situations. Some examples of these are: teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, hard work, leadership skills, attitudes, and/or values, goal setting, and increasing self-confidence.

Chimacum’s welcoming environment provides perfect opportunities for personal and social development.

Chimacum High School has excellent sports and extra curricular activities. From football to flag team we have won numerous awards and student recognition from all over the state. Our outstanding programs are: football, baseball, track, basketball, band, flag team, volleyball, cheerleading, tennis, golf and soccer. Many of our athletes who excel in a certain sport are offered scholarships and go on to play on college teams. Chimacum’s pride and spirit helps support these programs and the athletes.

Band Program

The Chimacum High School Band has won numerous awards while competing in parades, contests, or single student performances. The band travels to five or six different parades all over Washington and Canada.

The mission of the band program is to create a competitive band centered organization that will perform in festivals, community events and other venues as well as to promote a high-level appreciation for the performance and art of music. Through music we achieve higher-level thinking skills, creativity, and the enjoyment of performing for others. Our goals are as follows:

  • To create a Competitive/Creative team and learning environment
  • To assist in a higher level of educationTo achieve a higher understanding of music
  • To organize a Competitive/Creative Band team
  • To attend regional and non-regional competitions and higher
  • To support our fellow members in learning about music
  • To raise funds for entry fees, clinics, camps, trips, instructors and materials

We believe that those who have pride in themselves will generally project a positive attitude and have a better appreciation for life, music, and the arts. Those who have a positive attitude, regardless of their individual skills will always have a place in the Chimacum High School Band Program.
