Garth Gourley, director of secondary music
Mr. Gourley has been at Chimacum since 2007. Prior to coming to Chimacum, Mr. Gourley taught in the Jazz Studies and Music Education departments at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. While at UNC, Mr. Gourley performed with the prestigious UNC Jazz Lab Band I, UNC Wind Ensemble, UNC Symphonic Band, and numerous small groups. During his residency in the UNC Jazz Lab Band I, it was recognized in 2006 by Downbeat Magazine as the College Big Band Winner, and in 2007 as an Outstanding Performance Winner. Mr. Gourley has lectured and/or performed at the 2007 IAJE Conference in New York, New York, and the 2006 Region II North American Saxophone Alliance Conference in Greeley, Colorado.
Professionally, Mr. Gourley has performed as a member of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, The Roanoke Jazz Orchestra, a numerous small groups. As a woodwind doubler, Mr. Gourley has performed in numerous productions for the Heritage Repertoire Theatre in Charlottesville, Virginia. An active clinician, Mr. Gourley has worked with bands in Virginia, New Jersey, Colorado, and Washington, and has served as an adjudicator for band festivals in Virginia and Washington. Mr. Gourley has also been a guest soloist with the James Madison University Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Chuck Dotas.
Mr. Gourley holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado (2007), and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from James Madison University (2004). Mr. Gourley has studied saxophone with David Pope, Andrew Dahlke, and Jeff Decker. He also holds memberships to the International Association for Jazz Educators, Music Education National Conference (MENC), the North American Saxophone Alliance, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.
